Plans to stabilise slipway at St Catherine’s Breakwater

Published: 03 November 2025

As part of Ports of Jersey’s ongoing investment in the island’s historic harbours, plans have been approved for the next phase of works at the Grade 1-listed St Catherine’s Breakwater. Recognising how much St Catherine’s means to the community, we are committed to preserving this iconic structure so it can continue to be enjoyed by all.

Specialist ground investigations will focus on the slipway and buttress, two key areas identified through recent surveys and monitoring. These investigations, expected to take around two weeks and scheduled around tidal conditions, will help engineers better understand the stability of the site and inform future reinforcement plans. The work will focus on the slipway and surrounding ground and will not involve any direct drilling into the breakwater walls.

As a protected structure, St Catherine’s Breakwater benefits from careful oversight by government planning, heritage, and coastal defence teams. Every step is designed to balance public safety with heritage preservation, honouring the breakwater’s history while ensuring it remains resilient for generations to come.

A local contractor will be appointed to carry out the works, and once confirmed, a start date will be shared with breakwater users and the wider public.
