Ports of Jersey has lodged a planning application to remove the deteriorating landing stage at the end of Gorey Pier – the first step in a comprehensive strategy to stabilise and protect this historic Grade I structure.
Following extensive structural surveys and community engagement, Ports of Jersey have submitted a planning application to remove the old landing stage at the end of Gorey Pier. This marks the first phase of a wider stabilisation strategy designed to protect the pier’s long-term stability and heritage.
Over the summer, ground investigations were carried out along the pier arm and head to assess its structural stability. These findings are now being analysed by Hartigan Structural Engineers, and early results suggest that targeted maintenance and upgrades will be beneficial over the coming years. This new data, alongside previous and ongoing non-intrusive surveys, is helping us determine the most suitable methods to address the pier’s deterioration.
The planning application will cover:
- Removal of the upper deck and support pillars
- Installation of temporary support bracing from the lower deck to the original pier structure
These works are expected to be carried out from the seaward side, minimising disruption to pier-side activities.
Subject to planning approval, works are anticipated to begin around March/April 2026, with completion before the summer season.
Looking ahead
Ports of Jersey continues to work closely with planning authorities, Jersey Heritage, and local user groups to ensure the proposed works are sensitive to the pier’s Grade 1 listed status and its role in the community. The stabilisation strategy is being developed using wave modelling, LIDAR scans, bathymetric surveys and crack monitoring data collected over the past year.
Captain William Sadler, Jersey Harbour Master, said, “We’ve taken great care to understand the structural challenges at Gorey Pier and to plan a way forward that protects its future. The landing stage has served the island well for decades, but it’s now time to take the necessary steps to ensure the pier remains safe and usable for generations to come.”
