Jersey Airport has reached a major milestone on its journey to Net Zero, earning Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Level 4 “Transformation” status and joining an elite group of just 96 airports across Europe, that’s the top 25%, recognised for their leadership in reducing carbon emissions and driving sustainable change.
The achievement reflects Ports of Jersey’s commitment to creating a more sustainable future for the Island through its Planet and People Plan and ambition to achieve Net Zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030.
Across Jersey Airport, sustainability is no longer a standalone project. It is becoming part of everyday decision-making, influencing how the airport operates, invests and plans for the future. Working closely with colleagues, airlines, tenants, ground handlers and suppliers, the airport is taking practical action to reduce emissions and create lasting change across the wider aviation community.
ACA Level 4 “Transformation” is awarded to airports that have moved beyond simply measuring and managing emissions. It recognises organisations that are embedding sustainability into every aspect of their business, setting ambitious long-term targets and working collaboratively across their entire ecosystem to support global climate goals.
The accreditation recognises a range of initiatives delivered in recent years, including:
- Transitioning operational vehicles and equipment to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).
- Converting terminal heating systems to HVO.
- Moving the Fire Training Ground to renewable BioLPG.
- Investing in energy efficiency measures including LED lighting, smart metering and advanced building management systems.
- Supporting more efficient aircraft operations through Continuous Climb and Continuous Descent procedures.
- Introducing a Private and Business Aviation Decarbonisation Charge to help fund future carbon reduction projects.
Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE, said:
“Jersey Airport’s achievement of Level 4 in Airport Carbon Accreditation reflects not just commitment but tangible actions and progress in reducing its emissions and aligning its carbon management ambition with global climate goals. Its target of Net Zero Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2030, backed by improved energy efficiency and renewable energy generation, alongside close collaboration with airlines, ferry operators and suppliers, shows exactly the kind of ambition this level demands. On behalf of ACI EUROPE, I congratulate the entire team at Jersey Airport on this remarkable achievement.”
Sophie Alexander, Head of Sustainability and Community at Ports of Jersey, said:
“Achieving ACA Level 4 ‘Transformation’ is a huge achievement for Jersey Airport and a testament to the dedication of colleagues and partners across our airport community. What makes this accreditation particularly meaningful is that it recognises a fundamental shift in the way we think and operate. Sustainability is increasingly shaping our decisions, investments and future plans, while collaboration across the airport community is helping us tackle emissions beyond our direct control.”
“We’re proud of how far we’ve come, but we’re even more excited about what comes next. This milestone provides real momentum as we continue our journey towards Net Zero 2030 and work together to create a more sustainable future for Jersey.”
While ACA Level 4 marks a significant milestone, it is also a springboard for further action. Building on this achievement, Ports of Jersey will continue investing in low-carbon technologies, improving operational efficiency and strengthening partnerships across the airport community.
By accelerating progress towards Net Zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030, Jersey Airport is playing its part in creating a cleaner, more sustainable future for the Island and generations to come.
