Internship offered in marine hydrogen

Ports of Jersey is offering a Jersey student, or early-career professional, a marine hydrogen internship with Oceanslab. The role will provide hands-on experience in the emerging field of hydrogen energy within the maritime industry, and stems from a partnership with the Government of Jersey and marine hydrogen accelerator OceansLab. The project is part of Ports of Jersey’s commitment to decarbonisation and a net zero future.
OceansLab, led by Jersey round the world yachtsman, Phil Sharp, develops clean technologies through professional ocean yacht racing. The partnership will see Ports of Jersey and OceansLab investigate the use of hydrogen technology on port infrastructure and vessels including ferries, service vessels (tugs, dredgers, lifeboats) and cargo ships.
The agreement also includes educational opportunities for Jersey-based students through sailing experiences, internships, school visits and presentations on subjects with a focus on renewable energy innovations and ocean health.
Phil Sharp, CEO and skipper of OceansLab said: “I’m pleased to see this educational initiative coming to fruition with Ports of Jersey. This partnership between Oceanslab, Ports of Jersey and the Government of Jersey will explore how we can apply hydrogen fuel-cell technology and green hydrogen fuels to start decarbonising the Island’s maritime industry.”
Ports of Jersey’s CEO, Matt Thomas, said: “Our main role is to keep Islanders connected with the rest of the world, but it’s also our responsibility to work towards sustainable, decarbonised travel. This is a step towards a zero-emissions marine industry which will ultimately benefit Islanders and the planet.”
The successful internship candidate will gain real-world experience in hydrogen technologies, such as fuel cells, hydrogen production, storage, and usage within the marine sector. They will learn about the marine industry’s current trends, challenges, and regulatory environment, and they will see how hydrogen can contribute to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability in marine transportation.
The two-month paid internship will be based at the Oceanslab headquarters in La Rochelle, France.
