Hobie cat pair launch into Jersey Regatta

Two young Hobie cat racers, who have been sponsored by Ports of Jersey since May this year, are competing in the Jersey Regatta this weekend.

Ollie Voak (23) and Megan Roworth (22), came 6th in the Hobie 16 British Nationals earlier this year, and they will be competing in the Hobie 16 World Championships in Spain later this month. This weekend they will be racing on a little closer to home, in St Aubin’s Bay.

Megan said: “Over the summer we have been working on our sailing skills by competing in a range of events, including the four-day Hobie 16 Nationals in Poole, where we came 6th overall. We have also competed in the Hobie cat Summer Series, which consisted of 12 races over 6 weeks, and are pleased to say we placed 1st in this series. We also competed in, and won, the Rossborough Round the Island race earlier this month.

“The Ports of Jersey sponsorship is very exciting. It is helping us to compete in Spain, which is a huge event, and we can’t wait to represent Jersey in it. Sailing has been something we both have loved to do our whole lives and hopefully we will be able to inspire more people to get involved especially since it’s such an eco-friendly sport.”

Ollie said: “We’re proud to be sponsored by Ports and having their support to help us achieve our sailing goals is really amazing. It’s giving us opportunities we wouldn’t otherwise have had.

“Our aim is to continue sailing all year round, to compete in local events and continue to develop our racing skills. We also hope to compete in more international events each year – like the Worlds and the Europeans – as they are amazing opportunities to compete against high level sailors and hopefully we will learn from them.

“We’re very excited for the future, especially the Worlds later this month, and we can’t wait for the step up in challenge.”

Ports of Jersey’s CEO, Matt Thomas, said: “Supporting our community is very important to us. Our fundamental role is to provide the lifeline services of moving people and freight in and out of Jersey, but as a major Channel Island business, we hold a prominent position in the Island and we are committed to making a positive difference to the life of our community.

“One of the ways we try to do that is by sponsoring events across the Island, and we’re pleased to be able to help Megan and Ollie to progress in their chosen sport and to fly the flag for Jersey as they compete further afield.”

Megan and Ollie will be competing on Saturday (3 Sept) and Sunday (4 Sept) at St Aubin’s Bay.  The  2022 Hobie Cat World Championships is being held in Spain from 15-29 September.
