Two young Hobie cat racers, who have been sponsored by Ports of Jersey since May this year, have returned from the World Championships with a world-ranking and are keen to compete further afield.

Ollie Voak (23) and Megan Roworth (22), represented Jersey at the Hobie World Championships in Spain, where their overall placing was within the top 100 on the world leader board.

Ollie said: “We sailed against world champions and professional sailors, which pushed us to perform the best we could with minimal mistakes. Being surrounded by competitors from Brazil, Australia, America, Italy and more was a real eyeopener, and we could see first-hand the varied skillset of the rest of the world.

“The event was a great platform to share knowledge and learn from other competitors to help us improve the standard of competitive sailing. We’ve come back with lots of tips to share with the Jersey fleet.”

Megan added: “We are proud to have placed Jersey on the Hobie map of the world, and we are extremely grateful to Ports of Jersey for helping us compete in this world event. Attending this huge event has fuelled us to achieve more and we are already looking at other events further afield where we can represent our Island.”

“We have both loved sailing since we were young and would love to inspire more people to get involved.”

Ports of Jersey’s CEO, Matt Thomas, said: “I’m delighted to see that Megan and Ollie are making the most of the sponsorship we are providing. While our main priority is to maintain lifeline and passenger services at the harbour and airport, it is important to us that we support our community and make a real difference to Islanders.

“We’re pleased to support Megan and Ollie in their sport, and we hope they can continue to represent their home Island as they compete further afield.”

Megan and Ollie competed in the  2022 Hobie Cat World Championships in Spain from 15-29 September.
