Gorey Pier stabilisation
From Port of Jersey
4th March 2025
Ports of Jersey has submitted an application to the planning authorities, asking to carry out intrusive investigations at Gorey Pier, to determine what work is need to stabilise it. The pier’s landing stage has been closed to the public since October 2023 after structural deterioration was found. The next phase of work will investigate damage to the pier itself during Storm Ciaran, and to establish what remedial work is needed.
The pier is grade 1 listed so government consent is needed to determine the scope of the stabilisation required.
Since the closure of the landing stage at the end of 2023 engineers have been continually surveying and monitoring the pier to understand its current stability. Public Service Obligations Manager, Ande Vibert, said: “This work has included wave modelling, LIDAR scans, bathymetric surveys and regular crack monitoring. The resulting data allows us to analyse movement within the structure so we can plan how to stabilise it.
“The next stage is for more intrusive site investigations and following competitive tender, UK company Terra Firma are confirmed as the contractor to undertake this work. This will include drilling boreholes and trial pits along the pier.”
If planning permission is granted, there will be some minor restrictions on access to the pier for short periods while the work is underway.
This investigative work will inform the best methods to use to remove the landing stage and stabilise the pier.
