An evening with Dr Liz O’Riordan
From Port of Jersey
25th August 2022
A member of the Ports of Jersey Air Traffic Control team, and founder of local not-for-profit organisation cancer.je, has arranged for speaker and author Dr Liz O’Riordan, best known as the breast surgeon who got breast cancer, to speak at an event in Jersey.
Lorna Pirozzolo is a compliance technical support officer for Air Traffic Control, and when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018, she found that she had little time to search for information once she encountered the anxiety and fatigue of cancer treatment. She decided to bring all the Jersey-specific information on cancer support into one place, written in a simple way, with links to trustworthy and qualified sources of information. So she bought domain name www.cancer.je and decided to use it to benefit the people of Jersey.
Lorna said: “While researching information on breast cancer, I came across the work of Dr O’Riordan. She is clearly very popular among both patients and medical professionals on social media and gives educational talks to cancer professionals in the UK. I thought it would be great to invite her to Jersey so interested Islanders could meet her in person and benefit from her experience.
“Liz has co-written ‘The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer’ and has just completed her second book, ‘Under the Knife’. She also has a fantastic podcast, talking to celebrities about the subjects people don’t want to discuss, called Don’t Ignore The Elephant. She’s quirky and speaks her mind, and hopefully there will be time during the event to ask her about The Great British Sewing Bee, as she applied to go on the programme. It should be an interesting evening.”
Ports of Jersey CEO, Matt Thomas, said: “We are so proud of Lorna. Since she started working for us she has brought her significant scientific skills and experience to the organisation, while also undergoing treatment for breast cancer, setting up and running cancer.je, and supporting staff wellbeing. We are pleased to sponsor ‘An Evening with Dr Liz O’Riordan’ and to support the important work of one of our chosen charities, ABC Breast Cancer Support Jersey.”
Ports of Jersey is supporting the event at the Jersey Museum so that all the money raised from ticket sales can go directly to the charity. There will also be a collection on the night.
Lorna, who now has stage 4 breast cancer, added: “I’ve been working from home for two years, assisting with analysis of data, carrying out administrative tasks, and maintaining databases. My employer and colleagues have handled my situation so well and have always supported my fundraising events for cancer charities. I am incredibly grateful.”
The evening will see Dr O’Riordan interviewed about her experience as a consultant breast surgeon, a breast cancer patient, author and educator. The interview will cover breast cancer, survivorship, mental health, nutrition, menopause, myths about cancer, intimacy, and supporting cancer patients whether as a medical professional, family member or friend. There will also be the opportunity for the audience to submit questions for a short Q&A.
Tickets are available here for the event, which is at 7pm on Friday 2 September at the Jersey Museum.
