Littlefeet Environmental is a not for profit organisation (NPO), which through beach cleaning, collaborative community involvement and innovative thinking, aims to provide a platform that encourages individuals and organisations to take small steps towards building a more sustainable future by thinking globally and acting locally.

Beach cleaning

Beach cleaning is one way that you can help reduce the plastic pollution problem – and have some fun at the same time. Ocean currents are incredible and while some will spiral towards the centre of the oceans, others will naturally bring plastic pollution onto the shore.

Since the start of the pandemic there has been an enormous spike in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as face masks and plastic gloves. Of course, these are an important part of protecting vulnerable people, but the irresponsible disposal of PPE is a huge problem.

Globally, masks and gloves are washing up on beaches like never before. These pose a threat to marine life, which can get tangled up in the litter or mistaken for food. The combination of new PPE litter and cancelled beach clean events during lockdowns, means your contribution is more vital than ever!

Organising a beach clean is a great opportunity to get stuck in and do what you can. Does it make a difference? In the grand scheme of things, we are unlikely to pick up the 8 million tonnes of plastic waste that gets into the ocean, but it is a fantastic way to engage local communities and every little bit helps.

Your beach clean experience

Your response is important – a message from Littlefeet Environmental

Littlefeet Environmental began beach clean events in 2012, in an effort to do our part in reducing the global pressure on marine life. At the time, we were the only ones organising beach cleans in Jersey (we used to get some very strange looks!). By and large, we had a good idea of the amount of marine litter being collected and could compare this against man-hours spent cleaning.

Now beach cleaning has become almost a part of island life, with more and more people picking up litter while going for walks. Before the global pandemic, it was an enjoyable way for companies and employees to meet their CSR objectives and we helped many organisations to start their own beach cleaning programmes. This is fantastic and exactly the attitude we had hoped to instil when we first started this project.

To help us see if our efforts are having the desired impact, we needed a single database to record what was being collected from beach cleans. This site will enable us to collect valuable data from family groups and social bubbles collecting and will act as a central repository for organised beach cleans in the future.

Jersey cares

There has been a huge rise in littering since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic. In addition to masks, gloves and plastic aprons, people are abandoning tents, sleeping bags and litter in wildlife spots and on beaches.

Much of this waste is causing a hazard to wildlife and ending up in the ocean. Jersey too, has seen an increase in litter being left on the coasts and beaches with more people spending time outdoors.

Will you help us keep our beaches beautiful? Can you organise (within local events and pandemic guidance) a beach clean and help us protect our wildlife, the ocean and the wellbeing of our island?

Ports of Jersey has an important role to play in promoting a positive environmental culture and protecting the ecosystem. We look at ways to work with our community and local charities to protect our coastal environment, keeping our historic harbours and beaches clean and safe.

Through our partnership with Littlefeet, we’re delighted to be able to promote cleaning of the island’s beaches and coastal areas of interest. We’d encourage everyone to get involved and help us keep Jersey beaches looking beautiful for everyone to enjoy.
