Snorkelling

Snorkelling is a great way to explore Jersey’s beautiful and diverse coastal marine life. In 2022, the Blue Marine Foundation, working with Societe Jersiaise Marine Biology Section launched ‘Snorkel Portelet’, the first of several planned snorkel trails.

If you plan to go snorkelling, you should never go out without a buddy or a group. It’s important to lookout for others in the sea.

Snorkelling safety advice

  • Before you go, check the weather and the tides are suitable – do not go out in rough conditions
  • Never snorkel alone
  • Wear a wetsuit, fins, a mask and snorkel
  • Take a personal flotation device
  • Stay aware of your surroundings, other water users and surface craft / vessels
  • Look, but please don’t touch. You may harm marine life or injure yourself. Take care with feet and fins so as not to damage marine wildlife
  • Take nothing but photos, leave behind only your bubbles!

Know what to do in an emergency

  • Know how to handle currents
  • Be aware of tidal streams and how to signal for help
  • Call 999 and ask for Jersey Coastguard
