Refurbishment of Cranes at Outlying Harbours complete
From Port of Jersey,
22 June 2017
Work is almost complete on a major maintenance and repair project of a number of operational cranes at some of the Island's outlying harbours.
The work has been undertaken following the results of a full condition survey carried out on all its cranes by Ports of Jersey. The views of local boat owners were also sought to determine for what purposes the cranes were being used and how frequently, with the results showing that the major use is for lifting boats and equipment in and out of the water. It was therefore decided that for historic and outlying harbours to remain fully functional and compliant a programme of maintenance works was needed to carry out a range of improvements.
The programme of work, which started in early June 2017 included the installation of a new crane at Rozel as well as major modifications to cranes at Bonne Nuit and South Pier. All three cranes have also underwent hoist electrification together with the associated commissioning and testing necessary for approval certification.
The work has been carried out on behalf of Ports of Jersey by Ainscough Industrial Services. The UK based engineering specialist supplied the crane for St Aubin's Harbour in 2012 under a separate contract following a previous tender process and ensures that the units around the outlying harbours are standardised. A budget of £147,000 has been allocated for the works project, which is funded by Ports of Jersey.
There has been little disruption during the works programme and tenants of the pier as well as Boat Owner Associations have been kept fully briefed. As the piers are in constant use between October and April for the wintering of vessels it would have hindered the works programme if undertaken during these months, which is why the spring/early summer time was the preferred option to carry out the essential works.
Once works are complete, all of the outlying harbours' cranes will be fully compliant with the safeguarding of Workers (Cranes & Lifting Appliances) (Jersey) Regulations 1978.
